From the ancient Roman road, through many generations that walked it, (including the lost one - Hemingway in mind) to the present fun local crowd and Woody Allen’s locations of the movie “Midnight in Paris”.

The preserved old town still exists, but it is a little bit off the usual roads.

Rue Mouffetard is one of the oldest streets in Paris. Originally, it was a connection between Rome and Lutetia (Paris) via Lyon.

Hemingway Paris

Those who want to know more about the Mouffetard area and the rest of Paris should pick up Hemingway's Paris memoirs, "A Moveable Feast."  Published posthumously, the book is a series of the author's reflections on his life in Paris in the 1920s.

He mentions the Mouffetard area in several passages where he had his first flat at 74 rue Cardinal Lemoine.

It was a miserable apartment with no running water and a bathroom, but he called the apartment the jolliest place he had ever seen.

“A Moveable Feast” - Ernest Hemingway

A Moveable Feast brilliantly evokes the exuberant mood of Paris after World War I, a unique insight into a great literary generation, by Hemingway, one of the best American writers of the twentieth century.

You will fell in love with Paris, Hemingway and the Lost Generation all because of this book.

The entire area is well known for its open-air markets, namely Rue Daubenton, Place Maubert, and Place Monge, each of which delivers a very local Parisian lifestyle, not likely to be found anywhere else in Paris.

You’ll find many shops with original signs dating back as far as the 16th century, old-world cafes and sumptuous restaurants with gourmet foods, fresh market goods, local cafes and colorful boutiques.

On Sundays you can join the French who gather together to sing and accordion dance to the tunes of traditional French songs. You can simply sit and enjoy the entertainment, or get up and join the locals in a dance or two.
