Fiction

For the classics of British fiction, read anything — and everything — by Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, Jane Austen, and the Brontës. Agatha Christie's Miss Marple was introduced in 1930 in The Murder at the Vicarage.

For evocative Cornish settings, try Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca or The House on the Strand. The Pillars of the Earth (Follett), Sarum (Rutherfurd), and Stonehenge (Cornwell) are all set in and around Salisbury. Philippa Gregory's novels, The Other Boleyn Girl and The Queen's Fool, witness intrigue at the courts of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Charles Dickens' tale of Oliver Twist.

The latest in fiction for all generations is J.K. Rowlings, Harry Potter books.

Rick Steves London 2015

With the self-guided tours in this book, you’ll explore London, learn how to save time and money on the Tube, and how to avoid the mobs at the Changing of the Guard, investigate London’s world-class museums, venture into Soho’s theater district for a glitzy musical or a delicious Indian dinner and much more.

Notes from a Small Island

Veering from the ludicrous to the endearing and back again, Notes From a Small Island is a delightfully irreverent jaunt around the unparalleled floating nation that has produced zebra crossings, Shakespeare, Twiggie Winkie's Farm, and places with names like Farleigh Wallop and Titsey. Notes from a Small Island, an immensely entertaining travel memoir, strikes a nice balance: the writing is American-silly with a British range of vocabulary.
